Training of Odissi Dance at Utkal is scheduled according to Four categories of disciples.
1. Praveshi - Beginers
2. Nrityarthi - Learners
3. Nartakii - Performers
4. Pravina - Trainers
1. Praveshi - Beginers
Age Criterion – 6 years onwards.
Duration – 2 to 3 years, depending on regularity, response and grasping of student.
Practical – Praveshi phase of training includes habituating and preparing the bodies and limbs of new comers for Odissi Dance through Exercises, balancing techniques, teaching of Pranam, Chauka - Tribhanga Padanyas (Basic Steps), Hasta mudras, various Bhedas etc.
Theory - It also includes recitation of Sanskrit shlokas, basic definations, basic Talas and acquainting them with typical terminologies of Odissi Dance, knowledge about instruments and songs used in Odissi, informations about earlier and present Odissi Gurus and contributions for Odissi through their pictures and vdo clipings.
Odissi Repertoire – Mangalacharan, Batu /Sthai/ Pada vande
Exam – Praveshis can attempt 1st and 2nd Exams (Practical and Oral) conducted by Prachin Kala Kendra, Chandigadh at Local Exam Centre in Amravati.
2. Nrityarthi - Learners
Duration – minimum 2 to 3 years, depending on regularity, response and grasping of student.
Practical – Nrityarthi phase includes continuity of practices with basic Chauka - Tribhanga Padanyas (Basic Steps). In this phase training is mainly focused on perfection with higher level exercises and techniques. Next level Pure Odissi repertoires are taught to the Nrityarthis. also some Abhinayas pieces and folk Dances are taught as per mentioned in exam syllabus.
Theory - Higher level knowledge about different aspects of Odissi Dance are explained to and discussed with Nrityarthis. Syllabus oriented Printed notes are provided on minimum charges, which is included in exam fees.
Workshops/Events – Nrityarthis are eligible to attend workshops, seminars and lectures conducted by Guest Artists or experts and also can join for study tours depending on the age and physical ,financial capabilities.
Performances – Nrityarthis shall be considered to perform on stages, depending on their attendance and expertise and on requirements of the events and timely situations.
Exam – Next level exams are conducted every year and Utkalites are allowed to appear as per age criterion and level of preparations.
3. Nartaki/Nartak - Performers
Nartaki is more about perfection and readiness of selected Utkalites than a phase of training. As such Nartaki is a Performance Ready Troupe. Only Nartakis are considered and allowed for performances that demands professional perfection and expertise.
Events – Nartakis being seniors and experienced are shouldered with additional responsibilities while conducting and executing various events like workshops, seminars, performances, Festivals and Tours etc.
4. Pravina - Certified Trainer
Pravinas are Certified trainers and are authorized to guide and train the Pravishis and Nrityarthis (newcomers and Learners) in practical as well as theory, under the instructions of the Director.
Training for outstation aspirants :
Training to outstation aspirants is available but shall be affirmed only after detail meeting and discussion with parents and family members, on verification of identity proofs and training shall be scheduled as per time available on both the sides. Fees structure shall be varied from that of the regular disciples.
- 3 classes per week are conducted in general, subject to occasional flexibility with prior intimations by telephonic massages.
- Fees structure for all above categories is same, subject to changes in future.
- Uniform is provided through Utkal itself.
